MONDO CUT: THE INTELLIGENCE - “EVERYBODY’S GOT IT EASY BUT ME”

Lars has become soft as a pussycat. Where Males was neat around the edges, Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me is tidier than the oval office. The screeching, angular abrasions are gone, replaced with curves that glide across the newly found glaze in ways that sway your aural barometer in opposing directions. There’s a dichotomy to the album where you feel it would be better if more muddled but it sounds so sweet as is, you’d also recoil at a rougher, alternate version…or at least the thought of one.

“(They Found Me on the Back of) The Galaxy” is the best candidate to bring to this stand, as it sticks like goo (in the way only The Intelligence can), and also instantly fails to be as sharp perfectly dull as the mind-numbing “Secret Signals” off Deuteronomy. Yet it still sounds just as brilliant. Played back-to-back, the difference is subtle but if you listen to both albums back-to-back instead, the gap is so wide you’d think the half-decade older incarnation of Lars owns a pair of vice grips.

There’s also some slower, de-rooted Intelligence tracks tossed into the gravel, but they aren’t too off base either. “Little Town Flirt” is ripped straight off The Clams’ Sleep Talk, stripped of all Lars influence while Shannon (unconfirmed) cannons the vocals in her hypnotizing, Spector bellow. It feels totally alien and perfectly fits into the puzzle at the same time, sounding out of place anywhere but here. And hence the point - Everybody is what you thought The Intelligence would never stoop to and exactly what you secretly needed. Lars got a shave on this onemaking The Intelligence more accessible without strip-mining their manhood. We wish we could say the same about Glazin’.

He’s not actually giving anyone the finger here. He is counting and stops at 3 (the middle finger) there is another picture from this where he is laughing because he realized what he was doing I pretty sure it’s an outtake.
